Amplification and Sound Exposure Warning
Normal human hearing typically ranges from 0 to 120 decibels (dB). In our testing, we placed a small spider on a Petri dish and attached the contact microphone to the bottom of the dish, allowing us to clearly hear the spider walking around. For perspective, amplifying sounds to hear a small spider walking would likely require an increase of around 60 to 80 dB above normal hearing thresholds. This means that normal hearing would need to be amplified by approximately 100,000 to 1,000,000 times (50 to 60 dB) to detect such faint noises.
The FennekEAR is a highly advanced piece of equipment and should be handled with the utmost care and respect. It is imperative that extreme caution is used when exposing your hearing to amplified audio. The FennekEAR does not have a built-in limiter circuit to automatically lower the output level during loud sound intervals. It is highly recommended that the user deploys the FennekEAR in a controlled environment.
